Since my mom started cosmetology school and has recently become a licensed cosmetologist (congrats mom!), I've been far more conscious of what I use in my beauty routine. She's passed on a lot of great tips, tricks, and products to help keep my skin and hair healthy. What I've learned is that I'm a sucker for a great product with an amazing scent :) 

Beauty Travel: The Absolute Basics

We just got back from a trip to Yosemite, and realized that being out in the wilderness I only need a few toiletry items to get by and still feel human ;)

Function of Beauty

My hair is insanely flat and lifeless. How's that for a starting line? haha

My Lush Cosmetics Favorites

 

I was drawn to the sweet floral scents floating in the air at the City Creek mall and wandered in. I found myself at Lush, and was drawn to the bright colors of the bubble bath goodies. I started off with bubble bars, and have slowly expanded to the skincare and haircare products and have loved every bit of it. Their products are made using the freshest ingredients, and are perfect for my sensitive skin. This is not a sponsored post, I just love Lush products so much and want to share the love! Here are a few of my current favorite products! 

Rehab Shampoo

A few months ago I took home a sample of this shampoo to try out on my dry scalp and limp hair. It does not have any of the heavy ingredients that weigh down my hair. I've been using this for the past 2 months and my scalp is no longer dry and itchy, and my hair is weightless and soft :) 

American Cream Conditioner

I picked up a sample of this conditioner and paired it with the Rehab shampoo. ERMERGERSH. The smell is amazzzinngggg. My hair is soft and smells like strawberry vanilla; can't get any better than that. 

African Paradise Body Conditioner

I've talked about this a million times on my blog, but my skin is ridiculously dry being in Utah. This body conditioner has limited my slathering of lotion post-shower. I cover my skin in this right before I hop out of the shower, do a quick rinse then voila! My skin is soft and hydrated. Score. 

Yuzu and Cocoa Shower Cream

This scent is one of my favorites in the bubble bars, and has been for a long time. So when they came out with the shower cream option I hopped on it! It smells like chocolate and orange, SAY WHAT. I lather up and smell like a dessert ;)

Dirty Shaving Cream

This is actually Ryan's Lush shaving cream that I stole for this post. One of the many times he has reluctantly followed me into Lush, an associate lured him over to the men's products and sent him home with a shaving cream sample. Ryan got hooked so I treated him to a bigger tub of it, he swears by it! 

Bubble Bars

I LOVE bubble bars! They are what got me into Lush in the first place! Bubble bars you can break up multiple times to use a piece for each bath, where a bath bomb is meant for one bath. I enjoy the bubble bars because I get more bang for my buck. Every holiday they come out with limited seasonal bath products and they are sooo cute! If you're a bath fanatic, you absolutely have to treat yourself to a bubble bar stat! Below are my current favorites :)

Gimme Summer Braid Tutorials

Now that the warmer months are here to stay (cross your fingers!), I've been practicing my braid techniques. I absolutely love those thick Elsa-like braids, but find it so difficult to achieve with my color-treated thin hair! Which is why I've really enjoyed Garnier's new Whole Blends Color Care hair care line. 

I picked up the Garnier Whole Blends Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner from Walmart, and am looking forward to the hair mask when it gets stocked at my store! This line is created using naturally wholesome ingredients and comes in a variety of formulas. I absolutely love how soft this shampoo/conditioner combo made my balyage-colored strands. The argan oil and cranberry essence protects my color-treated hair, and it enhances the natural beauty of my blonde locks! 

This argan oil/cranberry combo hydrates, repairs, and nourishes my dry hair; and brings it back to life. I love using argan oil to hydrate my skin, and now that I can use an argan oil infused product on my hair, I've been over the moon. Doesn't hurt that this duo smells heavenly! :) 

I've got a couple of summer braid tutorials for you, and after washing and conditioning my hair with the Garnier Whole Blends Color Care products it was much easier to style my braids! 

I love this style for when my bangs are driving me nuts and won't behave! It gets the hair out of my face while also looking like I put it some serious effort into my 'do. 

1. Before! Spritz in some sea-salt spray and let's get started. 

2. Grab at least 2-3 inches of hair towards the front and clip the rest of it back. Don't want to accidentally grab some unwanted hair. Then spritz some hairspray so your braid will keep it's shape, especially if you have shorter bangs like I do. 

3. Start with 3 small strands of hair, and instead of braiding the strands over each other, we are going to braid them under one another. Braid each strand once, then start grabbing a piece of loose hair with your main strand to braid. 

4. Take a piece of loose hair with each strand and go under so the braid will sit on top of your head. Braid it tightly and angle towards the back of your head. 

5. Braid normally once you don't have anymore hair on your scalp left to braid. 

6. Hold the end of the braid and start to tug lightly at the outer side of the braid (the part away from your eyes). This will give it a bigger and fluffier look, which is the style! 

7. Tuck the braid behind your ear and pin it tightly with a couple of bobby pins. 

8. Bring the rest of your hair over the top of your braid and cover the pins. 

9. Huzzah! Enjoy your new braided bangs :)

I love this look! Fishtail braids are kind of a pain because they take a while, but the end product is absolutely worth it. 

1. Spritz your locks with some hairspray and brush back into a high pony. 

2. Secure with an elastic and take a piece of hair from the bottom-side of the pony, wrap it around the elastic and then secure it with a bobby pin. 

3. Split braid into 2 thick pieces. Then let's get ready to rumble.

4. Take a piece from your right hand chunk, and move it under and grab it with your left hand so this piece can join the left chunk family. 

5. See that strand from the right side now at home on the left? Yippee!

6. Take a piece from the left side and move it under to its new home with the right chunk family. 

7. Look at that! They've swapped places and are lookin' mighty fine. Continue this routine until you reach the end of your pony. 

8. Hold the end of the braid, and fluff away! It's also called pancaking, look it up my friends. Secure with an adorable tie!

9. Voila! Look at how fun this braid is! Perfect for those warm days :)

Get Beachy Waves in a Dry Climate

I'm a natural blonde...and a natural beach babe ;) Growing up, every summer we were at the beach at least twice a week, and I loved the wave I had in my hair from being near the ocean air. Since becoming landlocked in a dry climate, the wave doesn't come as natural to my hair anymore. While I have to put a little more effort into creating that same look, I enjoy the confidence I feel from this effortless summer look! 

I've created this look using John Frieda® Beach Blonde™ products I picked up from my local Walmart. While it's labeled "Beach Blonde™" that doesn't mean that brunette and red-head beach babes can't join in on the fun! 

1. Wash your hair with John Frieda® Beach Blonde™ Cool Dip™ Purifying Shampoo and Smooth Seas™ Conditioner which helps to nourish and prep your hair with the texture needed for this beachy style! I loved the minty smell and refreshing feel of these products. 

2. After blow-drying, use John Frieda® Beach Blonde™ Sea Waves™ Sea Salt Spray and take chunks of hair, twist them, and spray with Sea Salt Spray while holding the twisted piece of hair for about 15 seconds. The infused sea salt helps to create more texture, which is sorely needed in a dry climate! Plus the coconut scent is to die for :) Follow up with some light hairspray of your choice for hold. 

3. Curling rods are the best! I wrap a piece of hair away from my face to create face framing curls. Wrap it loosely around the rod, and tug the end of the piece of hair back and forth to move the curl back and forth around the curling rod. This ensures a messier and not-so-perfect curl. I typically leave the ends out to make it seem more natural. 

4. After curling a section of hair, pull/shake out the curls to make them fall apart and follow up with another generous spray of John Frieda®'s Beach Blonde™ Sea Waves™ Sea Salt Spray. 

5. Tease your crown with a teasing comb to create height, because with a dry climate my scalp creates more oils (ew!) which flattens my already thin hair. Not fun! I live for my teasing comb and hairspray haha

6. Voila, finished product! Perfect for a low-key summer day tending to the garden, laying by the pool, or a casual date night. I wore this look all day while running errands with my mom and hitting up the beach, and the beachy waves held all day long!
